The enduring appeal of John and Exene

John and Exene
There’s a reason that John and Exene are playing sold out shows thirty years after hitting the music scene. They just keep getting better. After the glow of their youthful punk days waned when they were the king and queen of the Los Angeles punk scene, the foundation upon which they based their musical inspiration has only gotten stronger.

The Dave Kolker Band

Dave Kolker
I had the great opportunity in the fall to see Dave Kolker and his band at The Bitter End. Playing originals mixed in with a few covers the band put on quite a show. Dave plays with a lot of soul and shows great dexterity on the guitar with the band providing a strong backing. If you ever get the chance I highly recommend seeing them. They will be at Kenny’s Castaway’s in April.

Plovnik (who also provided interesting visual projections for the entire show)

Ralph Nader on the Crisis of Imagination

Ralph Nader
Ralph Nader spoke to the students and the faculty at Fordham University on December 3, 2009. He delivered a lecture on gaining control in the marketplace where we grow up corporate. In a subtle analysis of culture Nader offered insights into how citizen’s imaginations are constrained by corporate power restricting their possibility for action. For Nader, it’s all about action which makes his outlook existential in essence. Existence for him is defined by the conflict between the consumer and the corporation where at evert possible turn the corporation seeks to upsurp the rights of the consumer to promote it’s vested interests and deny citizens their lawful rights for the possibility of action.

Chris Farrel
Local Station Board candidate Chris Farell’s view on the management change at WBAI. This has been a contentious issue as long term Program Director Bernard White was fired. On one side, which is reflected in Farell’s opinion, Bernard White had failed to adapt WBAI to changes in the 21st century and was unable to generate the funding which is vital to the station’s existence. On the other side which believes Bernard White was unfairly dismissed with overtones of racism involved.
